Фильм развивается при помощи игры на контрастах: грубое и жестокое действие с вкраплениями мирных лирических сцен; легендарный образ персонажей, построенный как на высоких поступках, так и на характерных и выразительных черточках их поведения. Форд обладает достаточной творческой силой, чтобы при всей противоречивости этих формальных приемов, похожих на капризы его таланта, сохранить и преумножить верность самому себе.
